Getting a good deal on a hotel room is a trip hack that every tourist wishes to participate in. One option to achieve this is to use a service that allows you to book rooms at substantially discounted rates from hotels that have unsold inventory.

This isn’t a novel idea. Priceline has been around since the dawn of the Internet, and travelers have been setting their own prices for years. For many years, Hotwire has also provided a comparable service.
Tonight’s Hotel During the smartphone era, it was released in 2010. The idea was simple: hotels could use the app to post any unsold rooms they had for that night, allowing last-minute guests to book them for a low price. Over the years, Hotel Tonight has expanded its booking window from tonight to seven days and, most recently, to one hundred days.

In many circumstances, booking with Hotel Tonight saves you a lot of money, sometimes up to 50%. (though in a small number of cases the app actually had slightly higher rates than a direct booking). Before you go out and book a bunch of bookings with the app, there are a few things to keep in mind.
All reservations made on Hotel Tonight are non-refundable and pre-paid. This may be acceptable for some travelers, but if you have a risk of missing your flight, this could be a problem.

Hotel Tonight may not be a viable choice for families or anyone who requires a room with two beds. The app only promises rooms for two adults, and most hotels in my tests only had the “selected by hotel” option for room type available. At the end of the day, if the only rooms left at the hotel are those with one bed, that’s what you’ll receive.
If you have a favorite hotel or are a frequent traveler, Hotel Tonight may not be the best option for you. Despite the fact that Washington, DC has over 100 hotels (and even more in the suburbs), only roughly 15 of them appear in a Hotel Tonight search. However, if you aren’t choosy about where you stay, this may not be an issue.
Finally, remember that booking travel through any third-party app, website, or service might result in headaches if something goes wrong. When you book directly with the hotel, any concerns can usually be resolved on-site; however, when a third party is involved, this is not always the case.
